Sheffield University Performing Arts Society Present Rent The Musical

Performed, produced and put on completely by students – come see this Emmy award winning show come to life at the Drama Studio this November.

Based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme, Jonathan Larson’s Rent follows friends Mark, Roger, Tom, Mimi, Angel, Maureen and Joanne as they navigate being young struggling artists in New York. Their lives are overshadowed by the AIDS epidemic with Roger, Mimi, Tom and Angel all dealing with the physical and emotional complications of the disease, as well as navigating intimacy and relationships with this diagnosis. Maureen’s flirtatious personality and continual cheating strains her relationship with the uptight Joanne, who wonders if their relationship is worth the stress. Mark, an inspiring filmmaker grapples with feeling like an observer and dealing with the prospect of his friends not surviving AIDS. They’re at odds against capitalist systems running New York which is represented by their former friend now landlord Benny who has traded bohemian ideals for money and power. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves, and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this heart warming show.
