We are thrilled to finally welcome Spell Songs to the Octagon!

A rare live performance by folk ‘supergroup’ Spell Songs, the musical evolution of the iconic Lost Words and Lost Spells books by acclaimed author Robert Macfarlane and award-winning artist Jackie Morris, featuring the multifaceted talents and collaborative genius of Karine Polwart, Julie Fowlis, Seckou Keita, Kris Drever, Rachel Newton, Beth Porter and Jim Molyneux.

Renowned for enthralling and moving live performances, the Spell Songs ensemble blends a diverse array of sounds from instruments such as the kora, electroharp, cello, Indian harmonium and more, which are gorgeously layered with musical and linguistic influences spanning from Orkney to Senegal.

Spell Songs will be joined on stage by Lost Words artist Jackie Morris who will conjure nature with watercolour and ink as the band weaves it’s musical magic. Expect an uplifting performance and a listening experience that intersects music, literature, language and art as a call to reawaken our love of the wild.

After the disappointment of the group’s cancelled show during the pandemic, University of Sheffield is delighted to have the group finally perform in the Octagon.
