Sheffield University Performing Arts Society present Sister Act

Set in Philadelphia 1977, Deloris Van Cartier has her dreams of stardom stripped away when she witnesses Curtis Jackson, her mobster boyfriend, commit a cold-blooded murder. After running to the police, Officer Souther decides the only way to keep Deloris alive is to hide her in the one place Curtis would never look for an extravagant nightclub singer. A crumbling, conservative convent!

Disguised as a nun, Deloris instantly clashes with the rigid Mother Superior who treasures the traditionalist values of the Catholic Church. However, Deloris finds her true calling when she takes over the convent’s dreadfully tone-deaf choir, bringing a sense of soul, both musically and emotionally, into the church. What was once a quiet chapel evolves into a powerhouse sound of the 70s. With growing media attention about this groovy new style in the convent, this disco diva can’t help but up the antics when finally reaching the limelight. Whilst the power of gospel helps Deloris find her fame, does it help her not get caught?

This high-energy musical explodes with powerhouse vocals, razor-sharp comedy, and a dazzling Motown-infused score. It is an uplifting tribute to the universal power of friendship, sisterhood, and finding your voice.
