A fixed media special – featuring experimental turntablism and tape loops

Happening twice a year, Sound Junction is a fully immersive experience with the audience surrounded by bespoke-built 360 degree dome of speakers, and the lights are dimmed.

We are delighted to announce our two main acts for this Autumn: Mariam Rezaei & Helen Papaioannou – two highly regarded performers who work across improvisation, electronics and fixed media.

Mariam Rezaei  is a multi-award-winning composer, turntablist and performer whose work spans experimental new music, free improvisation, noise, mutant club music and hip-hop. The Anglo-Iranian virtuoso expands on classic turntablist skills by developing new techniques with vinyl, allowing her to manipulate an expansive range of samples in real time. Rezaei’s approach has been recognised by The Wire’s Peter Margasak as a “radical expansion of the artform.” Her innovations include free juggling, turntable sines, needle dripping, fractured loops and needle weaving. Across solo, duo, ensemble, orchestral and operatic works, Rezaei takes the philosophy and aesthetics of turntablism into new territory, creating wildly inventive, energetic and beautiful music.

Helen Papaioannou’s work draws from her varied experiences across electronic music, performing in bands, improvised musics, and experimental ensemble compositions. She is based in Leeds (UK). Across her music, Helen’s style derives partly from a fascination with minimal sound palettes and evolving patterns, matched with an intensity that spills out into music that is at once stark, visceral, playful, and precarious. She is known for her solo project Kar Pouzi and various collaborations. For this set, she will do a special performance with 4 tape players.

Plus performances of new electroacoustic works from friends and students.
